Greetings, friends of Community Radio! The Prometheus Radio Project, a group that works to build, proliferate, and advocate for community radio, thrives not because of the dedicated work of its staff (though they are hard working basement-dwellers), or because of the skilled stumping and network building of its board (though you won't find a smoother-running, more knowledgeable and interested board anywhere). No! Prometheus thrives, and survives another day to build stations and fight for more licenses because of its network of volunteers, techies, and interns! We need your help today -- the next barnraising, legislative campaign, and international project simply can't happen without you. Look at this list, and let us know if you can help with any of these projects or needs!

1) Host an Event with Prometheus!

The staff, board, and volunteers of the Prometheus Radio Project love to travel, and spread the good word about community radio and what it can do! We've spoken at colleges, coffee shops, demonstrations, punk rock basements, churches, and even conservative think tanks like the Cato Institute!.

Invite us to your town, and we can talk about any number of topics, including but certainly not limited to:

   -- community radio
   -- radio history
   -- pirate radio
-- the growing movement for a more democratic media
   -- basic radio electronics
   -- internet radio

Depending on what you need, we can often stay for a day or two and schedule as many events as reason allows. A typical day in a Prometheus visit might involve:

-- a site visit to your studio and transmitter sites
-- a public talk about the movement for low power FM radio
-- meetings with folks who are interested in the different aspects of the new station
-- technical work on your new station
-- late night brainstorming with new radio station staff and volunteers
-- discussion of timelines, budgets, the principles of good radio, materials and suppliers, and political strategies.

Most of the Prometheus Radio Project's services are free, so when we travel, we ask that you find us a place to sleep for overnight stays (floor space or a couch is fine). We often pass the hat for donations when speaking at public events, and we sell useful books and tee-shirts. We also accept tax-deductible donations to keep us going. If your organization is a school, or other institutional setting, and we are giving a lecture or teaching a class, we will ask for an honorarium, if possible, to support our work. We never turn anyone away for lack of funds, though requests that help us pay our costs are given priority.

2. Help Community Radio News Spread like Wildfire -- Put One of Our Articles in Your Newsletter, Website, or On Your Station!

Choose from articles, handbooks, graphics, syndicated web content, linking-buttons, public service announcements, and much more! Anything you can find on our website is free for reproduction as long as the source is credited, and you link back to us or publish our contact information. Look for tools especially suited for adding to your website or newsletter at this page:

Documents You Can Use in Your Newsletter or Website!

Drop this Prometheus PSA right into your stations's playlist!

Or this PSA -- about our fight to win more stations! 40 seconds, .mp3

And this PSA -- same as above, but 20 seconds long!

3. Volunteer with graphic arts, web design and updating.

Prometheus is continually developing materials to promote the movement for better media and help low power radio stations learn their trade. You can help us keep our website up to date and make our literature more eye friendly! Contact hannahjs(at)prometheusradio.org to learn how you can help.

4. Take on a research project.

Put down that copy of Jane Eyre! Prometheus has lots of captivating and weird research projects that will provide you with something more interesting to think about than the latest Baywatch episode. Research can cover mostly anything. However, recurring topics include:

-- obscure legal questions
-- studies of current media issues
-- technical research on low power FM
-- pricing for cheap technical solutions for low power radio stations

5. Contribute financially.

Yes, like all other non-profit organizations, Prometheus needs money. If you have some you can spare, please consider sending it to us. So far, we've made a giant difference on a fraction of the budget of many other groups.

Lend Me Some Suga!

6. Form a group to start a radio station in your neighborhood.

There are a lot of places where it is impossible to get a low power radio station under the current rules- but it can't hurt to check! Our goal is to make community radio possible everywhere, so check in with us if LPFM is possible where you are. If it is possible, start a group or recruit an existing organization to hold the next community radio license for your town!

7. Got mad skillz? We need them!

Do you have a passion? Can you make T-shirts? Start non-profits? Fix computers or turntables? Help groups with conflict resolution? Write legal contracts? Whistle while chewing gum? Let us know, because we need your help! Our organization is driven by the talents of our volunteers, and we're always looking for those special people that can help us by doing the things they love.

Interested in sharing your skills? Click here to send us your contact info. Share your skills in the 'what do we need to know about you!' box. Thanks!

8. Help a nearby low power radio station.

Even if you can't start a station in your town now, there's probably a nearby station that could use your help. We can put you in touch with low power stations and you can get a first hand view of what a town with community radio can look like by helping one out.

Use this handy volunteer sign-up page to send us you info!
This page is currently tailored for international volunteers, soon we'll have a local page. Use the one above for now!

9. Come to a radio barnraising!

Come witness the birth of a new LPFM! Our radio barnraisings happen all over the country, where we assist in the development and construction of brand new stations. Come out and lend a hand laying those transmission lines, take in some workshops, or just contribute your constant witty radio banter while watching others do the heavy lifting.

Read more about our last barnraising here! A more comprehensive page coming soon.

10. Sign up to be kept in the loop.

Though we are based in a basement in Philadelphia, we work around the country and sometimes the world. We never know when we might need a couch to sleep on in Iowa, a local volunteer to organize a hearing in San Antonio, or a persuasive citizen to contact their senator in Alaska. If you sign up, we will know that we have a friend in your town when we need one!

Sign up here, or send your contact information to Hannah at hannahjs(at)prometheusradio.org.

11. Donate Stuff.

We love clutter, especially when it involves any of the following: radio equipment, decent computers and peripherals, office furniture, snacks for our volunteers, specialized radio books, unidentifiable electronics. Remember, Non-Profit = Tax Deduction.
