Prometheus Radio Project takes to the road again March 6 thru April3! The next Prometheus tour will begin in Philadelphia and is looking for host cities, towns, and villages in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

If you are interested in having us visit with your community group, media and/or music organization, college, university, library, or any other cool group that really wants community radio in your area, contact us now!

As with our tours of the past, this tour offers workshops about the Low Power FM service (or what's left of it) as well as the basics of radio broadcasting and studio construction. Additionally this year, we are interested in discussing what has occurred in the past year in Congress and the involvement of incumbent broadcasters (NAB and NPR), media democracy and the politics of programming, and a 2-hour course in media analysis.

We want to meet with ALL potential applicants, even if you can't find a frequency under the new restrictions!

Contact us...

with your name, contact info (email, land mail, telephone, city and state) and please let us know some details about the event you would like to host. We can meet with two people or facilitate a workshop with two hundred.

WHAT WE REQUIRE...

is nice folks to hang out with, a place to put down our sleeping bags (floors are fine), a shower, and the occasional home cooked vegetarian meal would be deeply appreciated. As always, Prometheus does not charge for our services. However, if your organization is funded (such as schools and churches) we appreciate any efforts to obtain honorariums. We appreciate donations and hope folks don't mind if we sell tee shirts and books.

Workshops have generally taken the following form:

an introduction to microradio

a history of radio, broadcasting and broadcast regulation

an explanation of some of the issues in media today: the impact of the Telecommunications act of 1996, professionallization of public and community radio, the effects of commercialism, and the dangerous trends in media concentration of ownership

a history of the free radio movement

an introduction to the basic technicaal elements of radio broadcasting

Usually, legal questions and detailed technical questions are answered in a Q& A at the end. If there are people interested in starting a station, we generally meet with them afterwards and do more intensive problem solving and resource sharing with them.

The story of the micro radio movement is an important one to tell:

It is an excellent opportunity for people to understand the nature and history of the media environment we live in.

It is a story of civil disobedience: how direct action can get the goods, and how a determined group of activists can force the laws to change to accomodate their interests.

It is also a story of activists actually winning significant reforms against some of the most powerful forces in this society- the broadcasters lobby.

It also has a fascinating cautionary twist- though we seem to be on the cusp of winning a new service, the picture has gotten incredibly complex and there are many risks we face of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory- if legalization is implemented poorly, the dial could well be flooded with more of the same commercial garbage that we started this fight to create an alternative to.
