Philadelphia Transmitter Workshops -- May 28th and 29th!

Test Your Mettle with 10,000 watts' worth of metal!

Hey folks! Do you lie awake nights enjoying techniphilic fantasies about high wattage broadcasting? We sure do here at Prometheus. That's why we're so happy to announce that Jeff Windsor, an engineer working at SUNY Oswego, got the University to donate two 'non-functional' giant transmitters to Prometheus.

The transmitters were built in the early seventies, and they look like something out of an episode of The Bionic Woman. They're orders of magnitude bigger than the ones we usually work with in the Low Power FM world. One of the transmitters will broadcast at 1000 watts, the other at 10,000! We're holding a weekend workshop to repair both transmitters, and we'll then send them to Central or South America for use by community broadcasters.

A handful of Philadelphia locals got together on December 3rd, 2004 with Eric Spiegel, a public television engineer who volunteered to teach us more about how these behemoths tick. As messed up as they were, we managed to get 2 wats out of one, and 10 watts out of the other when we checked their exciters (the physical piece of a transmitter that converts the audio into radio frequency! Woah!). More pictures from the workshops are available here -- http://media.prometheusradio.org/photos/gallery/big_transmitters.

We invite you to join us in West Philadelphia for a weekend workshop, where we'll train eachother to repair and use these transmitters! We'll spend two days with a great engineer, testing and repairing these machines. Prometheus will provide free, simple food and crash space with local participants and volunteers, if you bring your expertise or enthusiasn for learning electronics and community radio!

Where: Join us in Southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!
When: Saturday and Sunday, May 28th and 29th, 2005!
Cost:We're asking for a donation of $50 for those who can afford it, and whatever you can pay for those who can't. We never turn anyone away for lack of funds. Bring your check or cash with you!
