Prometheus International

Prometheus is branching out and we need your help

The staff and volunteers at the Prometheus Radio Project have done great work setting up radio stations in communities around the world. We expanding this effort and are looking for potential stations and potential volunteers.

Prometheus Radio Barnraisings

Help us Build a New Low-Power FM Station

In the spirit of neighbors pulling together to put up a new building, Prometheus holds radio barnraisings, events where we build individual community radio stations while advancing the movement for media democracy. Prometheus barnraisings allow new programmers to meet and new stations to compare notes on fundraising and equipment. At a typical barnraising, we bring expert facilitators to lead workshops on all sorts of topics of interest to new radio stations -- like organizing within the FCC, introductions to different aspects of radio engineering, updates on media and democracy campaigns, and how radio can promote today’s social change. The events are open to anyone interested in community radio. PRP plans to organize two radio barnraisings this year. We are now winnowing down our choices from a list of potential partners. Check back here to find out about upcoming barnraisings as locations are finalized.

Find out more about barnraisings in general and read about our five previous barnraisings.

We're Looking for a few Good Progressives

It is deeply ironic that progressives have fought so hard for this service, but right wing churches seem poised to get most of the frequencies. It is all the more ironic because these churches have put little or no effort into establishing the service, and do not seem interested in persuading their Senators to support it- they spend all their efforts on getting as many stations as they can.

Prometheus Radio Project seeks to counter this trend by getting as many legitimate, local progressive organizations and publicly minded institutions to apply for stations as possible.

[You might be just the type we're looking for or maybe you can help us spread the word about low-power-FM

Prometheus Trainings

Prometheus Radio Project will be accepting proposals from groups in cities throughout the northeast region to be subjected to our "Special Treatment". If selected, the lucky group (and lucky city!) will receive a special visit or two from Prometheus Radio People, complete with workshops, technical info, obnoxious advice, a good bit of nere-do-welling, and perhaps a little bit of something that might help your group establish a community radio station. Be warned that we make lousy houseguests, but are toilet trained!

Mentor Program

Big Station/Little Station

With the legalization of Low Power Service, it occured to us that already established community broadcasters would be the best suited to help new low power stations get off the ground and on the air. Our mentorship program is a service we offer to help link those aspiring to start a community radio station with the already established licensed stations in their community. These older stations could help advise the newly created ones with their wealth of information and experience.

Microradio Empowerment Coalition

A Sister Project of the Prometheus Radio Project

The Microradio Empowerment Coalition is a coalition of microradio stations, community and civic groups, organizations, and individuals who are committed to working together to replace the FCC's ban on low-power broadcasting with a new regulatory setup that establishes a community based system of non-commercial microradio stations, starting this year, and carrying over through radio's transition from analog to digital broadcasting.
