Prometheus Barn Raising
Prometheus Comes to New England!
Come Help Build A Radio Station In Portsmouth New Hampshire!
In 1999, Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire was one of the earliest
opponents of Low Power FM Radio. He introduced Senate Bill 2068, which
would have stopped all low power radio. At the time, it seemed that he
was just doing a favor for the powerful commercial broadcasting
interests and National Public Radio which voiced opposition to the
FCC's Low Power Radio initiative. After three years of delays resulting
directly from the bill that was eventually passed by Congress, a local
community organization in Senator Gregg's own back yard is gearing up
to go on the air. The Prometheus Radio Project (PRP) is teaming up with
Portsmouth Community Radio WSCA-LP to launch their new radio station in
Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
In the spirit of neighbors pulling together to put up a new building,
WSCA and PRP organizers will gather hundreds of Low Power FM Radio
applicants, journalists, radio engineers, students, lawyers, musicians,
and activists from across the U.S. to tune the antenna, finish the
studio, and flip on the station switch! People will come from across New
England and Canada, descending upon seacoast New Hampshire to construct
the radio station in a weekend!
The Portsmouth Barnraisers Need Your Help!
The Portsmouth Community Radio WSCA-LP 106.1 F.M., is holding a Radio Station Barnraising in September and is looking for folks to help with food, offer a road-worthy car, or perhaps a backyard for a barbecue for a hundred or so folk... The three-day barnraising is scheduled for Sept. 10, 11 and 12, and is the last step to hitting the air!

Over thirty workshops will be held in audio editing, fundraising, DJ
skills, news production, legal issues and more. The WSCA has already
received over 40 program proposals, ranging from political talk shows to
gardening, and even a yoga show. The station will be open to all
political viewpoints, and has community-wide support as well as the
support of numerous local business owners, Portsmouth City Hall and the
Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce. There will definitely be room
for a wider spectrum of viewpoints than the region's corporate media
currently allows. The community voices that Congress has done so much to
thwart are about to get their turn in front of the microphone!
The same weekend, an exciting international music festival will be held
in Portsmouth, and some events will probably be jointly organized by the
new station and the festival.
