Prometheus Barn Raiser a Success

South Arundel Citizens for Responsible Development (SACReD) made the cut for new low power licenses and we helped them build one of the first new low-power FM radio stations in the US.

We conceived the barn raiser as both a conference and master class in radio for new LPFMs and applicants but it also helped put the movement to free the airwaves back in the public eyeŠit was covered by Fox News Channel, several documentaries, newspapers including the Bay Weekly, the Capital, the Baltimore Sun, and the front page of the Washington Post. Presidents Day, Churchton Maryland.

About SACReD

SACReD have been working to control sprawling development In the Chesapeake Bay area. SACReD was granted one of only 4 licenses issued in the state of Maryland, and plans to continue its focus on threats to the local environment. However, SACReD member Michael Shay promises that on their station "All sides will be represented... There is nothing better than an informed community making informed decisions."

The group "encourages and supports those groups and individuals who are seeking to preserve the Bay, vital wetlands, sensitive ecology and the quality of life inherent in the Bay community. Citizen involvement is imperitive in the community, county and state government, planning and zoning processes and environmental planning."

"Preservation of Anne Arundel County's natural resources and unique way of life is being threatened by commercial development that fails to address the needs of the community and the environment. SACReD works with state and county officials to develop both short and long term management plans for our local environment. SACReD is striving to "stall the sprawl" of big box stores, strip malls and congestion from metropolitan Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis."

SACReD has among its goals

  • Protection of the Chesapeake Bay's water quality, beauty and wildlife habitats

  • Wetlands preservation and restoration

  • Community empowerment for environmental, resource and facility planning and decision making

  • Creation of educational and recreational opportunities for South County youth that increase environmental awareness and nurture commitment to ecological protection"
