We're Looking for a Few Good Groups
(in the Northeast U.S.)
Prometheus Radio Project will be accepting proposals from groups in cities throughout the northeast region to be subjected to our "Special Treatment". If selected, the lucky group (and lucky city!) will receive a special visit or two from PRP, complete with workshops, technical info, obnoxious advice, a good bit of nere-do-welling, and perhaps a little bit of something that might help your group establish a community radio station. Be warned that we make lousy houseguests, but are toilet trained!

Tired of fighting to get a moments recognition or coverage by mainstream media? Do you dream of how amazing it would be if your organization had its own radio show, or even, better its own radio station?! We are writing you to offer your organization an opportunity to start your own radio station.
The Prometheus Radio Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the democratization of the airwaves through the proliferation of non-commercial, community based, micropower radio stations. It is our belief that access to communications for all citizens is at the heart of a democratic society.
It is likely that in January of 2000 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be legalizing a low-power FM radio service. This means that non-profit organizations will have the opportunity to obtain licenses to operate community based radio stations for a reasonable price. Our plan is to work together with ten selected groups and offer workshops on the consolidation of media ownership and the importance of community based media, radio production and broadcasting, and to provide assistance with the licensing application procedure. If a low-power FM operating license is not created, we still plan to carry out the workshops and assist groups in producing shows that can be broadcast on larger non-commercial stations.
As the ownership of all the print, TV and radio media in this country quickly consolidates into the hands of only a handful of media giants, it becomes increasingly critical that communities create their own media so that our voices can not be pushed out of existence. Radio as a medium is only dieing because of the shallow repetitiveness which dominates it. But it is not dead. It has immense potential to bring communities together, not by offering separated pre-prescribed genres, as mainstream commercial radio does, but by reflecting the diversity and ecclectiveness of the people it serves. Radio can be a voice for community news and real dialogue, oral histories from our neighborhoods, spoken word and book readings, music by local artists and many other forms of community based programming.
If you are interested in this program, please print out and return the following proposal form. Proposals are due February 15th, 2000. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us: info@prometheusradio.org or call us at: (215) 476-2385.
